Topic: Army medics in Afghanistan. Soldiers & Doctors in NATO.

A team of British military doctors and nurses based in Afghanistan are on alert around the clock, never knowing when they're going to get a call for help.

  • Do combat team medics go on patrol like other soldiers?

  • Do US military nurses do this?

  • Are RAAF Medics also allowed into MERT?

  • I don't think you need to apply to be tasked to the MERT. If you are a paramedic in the RAF you will be pinged at some point.

When I did my tour back in '09 they were starting to take RAF medics off the MERT so there were two paramedics, a nurse and a doctor forming the team but things may change again......

  • @mrrmancunian i'm wondering the same thing, i'm wanting to apply to the RAF when i finish uni and im interested in medic amongst a few other roles btu i wanna do MERT. if you've managed to find any info that would be really helpful thanks

  • @smudgeski Do you know how long it usually takes before you can apply for MERT after joining the RAF?

I've got my interview on Monday as it happens for RAF Medic, but there's no info on how long it takes before you can go for MERT.

  • Sorry to be pedantic but MERT is primarily a RAF lead asset.

  • What these brave men and women do for our wounded comrades is exceptional. You give the feeling of hope to the fallen that help WILL come no matter what.
