The end of each of Hoffmann's tales requires a directorial master stroke (coup de théâtre). Too often theaters have chosen to abbreviate the finale of the Olympia act, but here it is performed uncut and the audience is delighted and completely involved in the result as the torso of the broken Olympia runs amock before the final curtain.
For other excerpts from the Olympia Act from the integral edition of Michael Kaye (now a co-edition of the opera with Jean-Christophe Keck published Schott Music in collaboration with Boosey and Hawkes and Bote&Bock).
