Jie Wan-lai's ancestors were from Varivuhan community in Yilan County. He relocated to Hualien with his grandfather during childhood. Xie started researching on the Kavalan culture in 1957 in order to fulfill grandpa's dream. He spent weekends interviewing other Xie family members and documenting information about the Kavalan tribe. He retired from a government post in 1988 due to illness after 30 years of service. Jie always carried a smile on his face. Even though he needed regular dialysis during the last 21 years of his life, he never stopped fighting for the Kavalan people. He is honored as the father of the Kavalan because of his great contribution.
