This romantic song by the Seekers is actually originally a Russian folksong of quite brutal content. Huliganov brings the two themes back together again, both culturally and linguistically.

Lyrics:

Say goodbye my own true lover
As we sing a lovers song
How it breaks my heart to leave you
Now the carnival is gone
High above the dawn is waiting
And my tears are falling rain
For the carnival is over
We may never meet again

"Волга, Волга, мать родная,
Волга - русская река,
Не видала ты подарка
От донского казака!
Чтобы не было раздора
Между вольными людьми,
Волга, Волга, мать родная,
На, красавицу прими!"

Мощным взмахом поднимает
Он красавицу княжну
И за борт её бросает
В набежавшую волну.
Now the harbour light is calling
This will be our last goodbye
Though the carnival is over
I will love you till I die
Though the carnival is over
I will love you till I die

  • I enjoy your posts immensely. Your Russian pronunciation is impeccable. I take my hat off to you. Nevertheless, here you've pronounced one word incorrectly - and as a result, misinterpreted the sentence where it appears. What you've pronounced as "волнами людьми" (which makes no sense) is in reality "вольными людьми." The related sentence means, "Lest there be a quarrel between the free people." It has nothing to do with any "people of the waves."

  • There seems to be this link between yourself and ladies getting flung into the sea. Not only does your name reference a certain poem on that topic by Lordy Byron, but also I first I see of you is your looking at the Stenka Razin poem - or is that just pure coincidence?

  • No, Sir, it's just sheer coincidence. I think that drowning women is ungentlemanly. It's also ecologically unfriendly, as a Russian folk parody of the Stenka Razin song clearly states:

    Стенька, Стенька, ты хороший!

    Как тебя нам не понять?

    Но давай не будем, Стенька,

    Водоёмы засорять!

  • ;-)

  • hehe hugo you trying to tell me something hahaha ;p

this may still workout for me yet hahaha ;p

    dobrui vecher!

  • I'm not Hugo. I seem to go around the world every 80 days, but's that's where the similarity ends.
