I wonder why he didn't mention the legend of the "Angels of Mons" - or maybe something about Arthur Machen's short story: "The Bowmen" which is actually based on that 1914 battle.

Watching these when I was a child got me into military history.Thankyou Richard Holmes you will be missed

This series is a classic that hasn't been duplicated. Holmes' episodes on the great war are remarkable for his brutal honesty regarding a greater tragedy which, to this day, was never well covered in video. Truly the war that defined the century, one painted in overtones of mud and blood.
This series' lack of popular awareness is saddening. Thanks for the upload.

"They were hard men, and frankly a lot of them enjoyed it." Ooooooh matron.

Richard Holmes was a magnificent historian. It is a great shame he is no longer with us.

Now the presenter is dead. God bless him.
