The Tune: A traditional melody from Ireland, played in the key of G. I'm playing it as a solo tune with no chordal backing, and I'm playing it out of time, with many notes coming from hammer-on and pull-off fingering.

The Tuning: I've been experimenting with this tuning which puts the top 4 strings into a tenor guitar ratio (fifths), with the the 5th and 6th strings as bass drones - good for fingering traditional tunes. The actual tuning is F-Bb-Bb-F-C-G - capo'ing on the 4th fret allows me to play in the D and G keys commonly used in traditional fiddle music.

  • Yes - I took the Swarbrick version and adapted it for the guitar. Many of these traditional tunes have all sorts of variants :-)

  • Hi Will,

You're becoming quite productive with all these videos.

Do you know any work of Tommy Emmanuel. If not go see for yourself. This man is (one of) the greatest guitarplayer(s). He inspires me. The second of april I'll go and see him in Eindhoven (The Netherlands)

A performance that makes me smile from the first until the last note.

  • Hi Rob - yes, I saw Tommy Emmanuel over here about 4 years ago. My version of "Blue Moon" was inspired by seeing him playing it. :-) Will

  • Interesting effect with that tuning and the use of thumbpick

  • Nice one Will.Sounds even better when followed immediately by Lord Inchiquen as per Davey Graham on Stefan Grossman's Radio Downloads site.

  • A nice tune for St Patrick's Day Will, well done!
