Generally regarded as the greatest actor of the 20th century, Olivier's Academy Award acknowledgments include fourteen Oscar nominations, two wins for Best Actor and Best Picture for the 1948 film Hamlet, and two honorary awards including a statuette and certificate. He was also awarded five Emmy awards from the nine nominations he received. Additionally, he was a three-time Golden Globe and BAFTA winner.

In this interview a younger Sir Laurence Olivier talks about being determined to master Shakespeare, and he came to be regarded as one of the foremost Shakespeare interpreters of the 20th century. This 1966 interview was taped at the Old Vic, where he had debuted nearly thirty years earlier.

  • Is it safe?

  • @rumleskaft and the 50s, 70s, most of the 80s...

  • only in the 60s could a TV host puff smoke while doing an interview

  • It seems less an interview than a rehearsed exchange,at least at the begining.

  • Well, this is vapid.

  • Thanks for a remarkable glimpse of a gracious, genial, grave, garrulous, ingratiating, engaging, genuine giant and servant of the theater: "One can see when a foreign company who is used to the idea of a permanent ensemble ... arrive upon our shores...it is that hot breath of unity that ... has always seemed to be more important than the star system. It is more important to an audience, ... though goodness knows how many years it's going to take us to make that clear to them. But it must be."

  • @JPLV Well, yeah...
