In this webisode, 2004 Olympian Rhadi Ferguson addresses the question of how a 40 year old grappler can adjust to the inherent situations of grappling. Some people have small panic attacks when they get put into positions which are uncomfortable or which they are not familiar with. 2004 Judo Olympian and Brazilian Jiujitsu Black Rhadi Ferguson addresses how one can handle panicking on the mat and how to practice successfully when you are learning how to adjust to comprimising situations and positions on the mat.

  • im a wrestler and started training judo and bjj now on top of my striking training for mma. i still have panic problems from being on my back. will this help break my panic habits from being on my back that developed when i started wrestling

  • He is right, the one exercise is to simulate constriction. It is a damn smart exercise, because it puts you in the most absolute shit of all positions . For lack of a better term.

  • Really great video, Rhadi. This is an issue that many SO many new (and some experienced) grapplers are afraid to address, they feel embarrassed for having these feelings of dread when put in bad positions. Sharing your own experiences and methods that you used to overcome them is fantastic!

  • With my respect offered to couch Rhadi, the problem is not lack of air, it is the opposite. Let me explain. But before I do I need to say that practice BJJ, I am 46, I am also a psychologist and play various air instruments. The reason people cannot breath is because they have too much intoxicated oxigen in the body or in their lungs. Their rhythm is off. Couch Rhadi is showing you is an "exposure" exercise. Learning to breath is the key. You may think you do know. Breath pausing in between ;)

  • Nice tip, thanks Rhadi!

  • I will certainly have to try this. Thank you, this sounds like a very good psychological training exercise. Thx
