James Gordon's Video Of The Month #4..
December 09.. A Christmas song about the class distinction in our society most noticeable at the holidays.
"There Is No Silent Night" for the homeless, the disenfranchised, those on the margins of society.
There Is No Silent Night ©James Gordon 1999

How can you rest ye merry gentlemen?
How can you not be dismayed?
By the number of poor souls
Who are so cold on Christmas day?

Jesus was born in a manger,
Yes, he was homeless too.
You'd think in two thousand years since then,
We'd learn what we should do.

Maybe where you've decked your halls, Everything's all right.
All is calm, and all is bright;
But in the dark where the flocks are no longer watched,
And we're all kept out of sight,
We don't sleep in heavenly peace, there is no silent night,
There is no silent night.

We are your neighbour's children,
That you have seen before,
Since your goodwill's only towards some men,
The rest beg at your door.

Though the snow is all about,
That's the only thing that's even;
All too few of us can share,
On the Feast of Stephan.

Chorus:

Tonight there are glad tidings,
For those of wealth and rank possessing,
But where is the star I wonder,
For those who don't have their blessing?

Jesus, little lord Jesus,
The winter winds blow stronger
And these dark December nights
Are still getting longer

  • Dear seemingly indefatigable James:

    You appear to be everywhere, shining your ubiquitous flashlight into the darkened corners and elusive crevices of everything terrible that needs to be noticed.

    Thank you for turning your touring time into something so purposeful.
