vote for mccain so we can keep high gas prices and continue gettin ur family and friends and grandparents continue losing there homes while he has 12 homes and we only have 1 and were not worth 100 million dollars so think about it

Yes I know what the formal role is... I was being sarcastic, because most of them don't seem to do much. Except Darth Cheney, obviously. :-)

The formal powers and role of the vice president are limited by the Constitution to becoming President in the event of the death or resignation of the President and acting as the presiding officer of the U.S. Senate. As President of the Senate, the Vice President has two primary duties: to cast a vote in the event of a Senate deadlock and to preside over and certify the official vote count of the U.S. Electoral College.

In recent memory I would say Cheney and Bush is the only example. Although knowing what I know about him now, I often wonder how much George Bush Sr. did behind the scenes when Reagan was president. But most of the time I used to sit around wondering what the vice president did all day.
