  • One "international evangelist" who visited Taiwan many years back spent nearly 10 minutes trying to expain the necessity of the rules of croquet to his translater duirng his presentation so that he could make a point. If he'd chosen basketball or baseball, the translator and the audience would have gotten it immeditaely. Know your audience and their cluture!

  • True situation. I grew up in Madrid, Spain the child of missionaries. Someone came to visit and did not speak Spanish. We went out to Retiro park (Madrid´s most famous) and did some open air evangelism. I was chosen to be the translator. She began saying she was going to speak about three ships. So i translated that. Then she proceeded to say the first ship was Fellowship, Friendship, etc... I had to retrace and redo the translation in a way that made more sense... This was back in the late 80s
