According to the Alzheimer Society of Windsor-Essex County approximately 100,000 people in Ontario have Alzheimer's disease or other dementia's (1 in 13 over the age of 65). One Amherstburg resident wants to make a difference and highlight the importance of support for Alzheimer's caregivers by sponsoring a run for heroes.

Chris Uszynski, is race director, runner and coordinator of The World Alzheimer's Day Run for Heroes Marathon, and he knows all too well about living with a loved one who has been diagnosed with Alzheimer's Disease, and the challenges faced by their caregivers each and every day. Chris's father was diagnosed with Alzheimer's 20 years ago and has lived at home with his wife who was the primary caregiver. The World Alzheimer's Day Run Ultra Marathon was started in 2007 as spectacle to honour his mother and raise money for the caregiver support programs provided by the Alzheimer Society across Essex County. Over the years the run has grown in size and length, in 2007 it was Amherstburg to Lakeshore with a 65Km distance. From 2008 to 2010 all started in Essex and always finished in Amherstburg at run distances of 88Km, and 100Km. This 13.5 hour run traveled through many communities around the Essex County but always ended in Amherstburg. The event attracted over 250 runners each year, mostly running the relay and a dozen runners that ran the entire 100Km length.
