Sunday, March 16, 2008 at the Scott Joplin House in St. Louis, Missouri. Sue Keller sometimes does her most interesting work during the sound check! This was recorded shortly before her seminar presentation on "Women and the Blues". The piece is a composition by Laura Nyro titled, "Billy's Blues". This wasn't actually part of her presentation which covered the following early blues women: Mamie Smith, Bessie Smith, Ma Rainey, Lucille Hegamin, Ida Cox, Alberta Hunter and their influences on Ella May Morse, Billie Holiday, Etta James, Patsy Cline, Marcia Ball, and Aretha Franklin. But maybe Laura Nyro fits right in with that bunch too. The piano is a 7-foot Boston Grand model 218.

  • Absolutely fabulous! I was looking on the ragtime press website for a MIDI file of this song and a few others, but couldn't find them. I think I've looked through the whole site, am I missing something or were there dimly no MIDI's of this? I'mg guessing it's more ragtime that goes on the site! (I only wanted to know because I often learn some songs by using the MIDI files in GarageBand)

    Thanks!

  • Thanks, @CooCurrent. I do have midis which include this one as part of a studio-recorded Nyro tribute project that's almost done. But what the heck. The piano parts are finished. So I might as well put them up. I'll do it this weekend.

  • @hv60604 Got the MIDI files. There was also a song 'Lu' that I was looking for a while back, and I also found it among the MIDI's, which was great! Thank you very much for putting them up, I really appreciate it!

  • @CooCurrent You're welcome. Sue wasn't sure the piano midis would be useful to anyone because they generally lack the melody lines carried by the vocals and other instruments. Glad you find some of them useful.
