The second in the series of Amazon Web Service tutorial videos. Here we describe how to create a keypair for shell access to an Amazon Machine Image instance, how to do basic firewall configuration to enable remote login and finally start and connect to the a basic Amazon Linux AMI.

All comments and questions would be most welcome.

  • Btw, to all those who watch this: if you have any particular requests, do let me know. I'll try to create more of these videos.

  • Your contact info still shows after the blurr, might want to fix that.

  • @Imakenoapologies Thanks for letting me know. It's dummy anyway. I was trying to learn Camtasia :)

  • I have a slightly offtopic question which you might be able to help me with.

I am a tad unsure of how the usage of instances is calculated.

I already know of the AWS calculator But am unsure what they mean by "usage".

Does this mean the amount of hours the instance is indicated as "running" in the AWS console, or does this mean how many hours the instance is active (% CPU usage)

Hope you can help me and thanks in advance

  • @jeroenpelgrims Thanks for the appreciation.

EC2 costs are dependent on the time for which the instances are "running". You don't get charged for "stopped" or "terminated instances". Also, it depends on the type of the instance. For example, micro instances cost less than small ones. It doesn't depend on the load.

You get charged for running instances at per instance per hour basis.

  • I love the start of the video. May Allah reward you for this tutorial. :)

  • Thank you for the video. You are the only one who helped me to connect to the server.

PS. This is my first experience with Unix based OS.

  • I'm trying to figure out how to install a full Sharepoint server platform on EC2. the articles I have seen just gloss over details like dealing with a requirement for a domain controller. Also, some of the articles were written before Windows Server 2008 and Sharepoint 2010. If you'd walk through this kind of scenario I think that would be fill a void

  • @csrdu very nice videos, thanks for developing these.I have developed a facebook app and would like to use the AWS for hosting this app.I browsed through the Amazon WS website but could not figureout how much approximate cost I would have to incur for this. Can you give some indication on costings or may be make a video on its present costing or pricing models.

  • @harikishore007 Exactly. If you don't pay, they will block your account and you won't be able to terminate the instance. They will still charge you :)

  • @csrdu : you will be charged even for stopped instance, unless you terminate the instance you will be charged.

  • Thanks for this tutorial! It was just what I need to get started on EC2.
