You are misusing the word "canon."
What canon is is basically the universe of the game/book/movie setting. How a person reacts to it, or whether or not he/she cares about it, is irrelevant.

That has been disproven before. The Direlict Reaper itself is far older than the Protheans. Further, the Mass Relays predate them.

This would have been CANON if BioWare actually gave the Collectors a role in ME1. You just couldn't care about the Collectors' backstory in this game that much.
