Dr. J. Buzz Von Ornsteiner aka Dr. Buzz discusses his psychological insights with Ashley Bandfield on the Thomas Fast murder trial located in Bradenton, Florida. Thomas Fast who had a history of mental health issues (delusions) was on trial for the murder of his step-mother (whom it was reported chopped her up and placed her in plastic bags in a pond). After deliberating for just over four hours Monday, a jury of 5 men and 7 women found Thomas Fast guilty of first-degree murder and robbery in the 2007 death of his stepmother, Susan Fast.
One female juror cried after the announcement, while the defendant looked slightly shaken and his neck and face rapidly reddened. Fast was immediately sentenced to life without parole for the murder and a concurrent 15 years with credit for time served for the robbery.
Although Thomas Fast decided not to testify, jurors heard from him Monday via two audiotapes: a police interview and a recorded telephone call he made to his mother from prison.
In his closing argument, prosecutor Art Brown told jurors that for all the talk of drug rings and conspiracies (delusional thoughts from the defendent were C.I.A., F.B.I. and general paranoid thinking), what really mattered was Thomas Fasts mindset toward Bruce and Susan Fast. Now insanity is not a defense in this case, said Brown but hostility, even if partially based on delusion, is relevant. The general perception was that Thomas Fast thought he would be cut out of his father's will and this was do to his step-mother, who disliked him.
