My definition of a subluxation:
The subluxation is a defense mechanism that appears as a protective response to a muscular and articular overload. When an articulation is supporting an excessive load or pressure in a specific direction, the proprioception receptors located in the tendons, muscles and articular capsule related to that articulation send that information to the proprioceptive system which in turn analyses it and induces a specific reflex motor action from the central nervous nervous to the aggressed articulation. This reflex action is a specific directional movement limitation to prevent any movement that could tear the disc or the articulation or the cartilage. It functions somewhat like an electrical circuit breaker during a short circuit or an overload. But, whereas the power can be restored once the short circuit problem or the circuit overload have been solved, the subluxation does not vanish although the overcharge has been stopped. This is a defect in the system. So the subluxation is not a lack of juxtaposition of two vertebrae responsible for nerve inpingment and dysfunction, but a specific directional limitation of mobility. Then adjusting must be defined as counteracting this action through de-programming the defensive reflex. This can be realized through a light touch stimulation of the propriocetive receptors directly associated to the subluxated articulation. I specify " light touch " as opposed to normal pressure or Trigger point treatment because the exerted pressure must be felt by the patient as a threshold between comfort and pain, and never as a painful pressure which would stimulate nociceptors (pain receptors) eliciting a negative muscle tension. The application of a light tense pressure during 2 to 3 minutes to a 2 inches area surrounding the subluxation will elicit a reflex response of total relaxation of the previously painful and tense area.
