@zipper179 Yeah, that was when Tom Hagen was frustrated because he was no longer the consigliere. And Vito tells him "I never thought you were a bad consigliere. I thought Santino was a bad don." It still would have been interesting to see what would have happened if Sonny hadn't been killed at the toll booth. Would there have been a power struggle between he and Michael? Because Sonny never would have let Michael take power as easily as Fredo did.

@Sonnyxleet Your statement of Sonny's being too fierce, is similar to what was told to Musashi, a great warrior,. played by Toshiro Mifune, in the 'SAMURAI' Trilogy.. In the book, Don Corleone, twice, stated Sonny's shortcomings.. 'Never let anyone outside the family know what you're thinking..' Later, he states that Sonny would have been a bad don..

@Sonnyxleet Yeah, I gotta admit that Barzini knew that Sonny would fly off in a rage to go pick up Connie and kick Carlo's ass again.  And Michael waited until the time when he was getting rid of Tessio, Moe Greene and the other heads of the five families before getting revenge on Carlo. Carlo was just a dupe for Barzini and thought that after Sonny was gone he'd have power since Fredo was a nice, but incompetent guy and Michael was hiding in Sicily.

@ridgerunner721601 No. Michael was the lion. Lions are ruthless, they're smart, they're fierce, they're proud but not arrogant. Lions know they're the king but they don't express it. Santino was smart, but he was too fierce. The very death of him was due to his impulsive nature. Michael? He would never act on impulse. He would plan. He would take the time to ensure that the plan was executed as efficiently and effectively as he see fit. A lion would never rush into a trap the way Santino did.

@rainzoro I don't know. I think the real lion of the three Corleone sons was Santino. Fredo was just an ordinary guy who had no business being in the rackets other than that he was the Don's middle son. It would have been interesting to see who would have ended up becoming the new don if Sonny hadn't been killed at the toll booth. Michael was smarter than Sonny, but not as feared by the other families.
