Harmonies Poetiques et Religieuses was composed by Liszt in 1849 after the Habsburgs had put down the Hungarian Revolution. Funerailles, No. 7, is the most often performed section of this composition.. Liszt was as fervently Hungarian as Chopin was fervently Polish. I doubt that Liszt conceived the Funerailles as a mindless show piece. Here Rubinsteins reflective performance, gives us a somewhat more poetic conception of this work than we may be used to hearing. This is not to say that it supersedes other pianists performances, but it allows us to hear another master pianists thoughtful interpretation of this composition. Unfortunately, this approach did not work in his 1963 recording of Liszts B Minor Sonata which requires more Sturm und Drang than Rubinstein felt comfortable with in his later more cautious years.

  • Rubinsteins career was the best of his time.... he could record so many things in astonishing quality which makes him more important than Horowitz This strong interpretation here has a very concrete sound and structure which makes it more dramatic than other virtuous interpretations of this piece.

It is not the quickest interpretation but I don t care... The spirit of Liszt for this piece is achieved.

  • Thank you for your perceptive comment.

  • As always with rubinstein everything works. It can never be a BAD performance. Even if the interpretation is not as deep with the composer as others can be, Rubinstein is always the world and sound of the piano. And in this no-one absolutely NO-ONE can come even close to him.

  • This just amazing, that's all I can say.

  • 8:38 Eargasm

  • Emotive ...

  • @pianokid1849 Yeah very odd. As far as I remember he's letting go of notes that are specifically notated to be held.

  • Is it just me or is there a very clumsy edit at 56 seconds? I love this recording though... not at all the usual look-at-me-I-can-play-loud-and-fast Liszt that so many people spew out.

  • I love it.

  • master of sound

  • Liszt ! Liszt !

  • I AGREE. IRREFUTABLY.
