Backpacking is a great way to get out into nature, but choosing the right backpack can be tough. Its a personal decision...but here are a few things to consider. Internal frame packs are better for long distance or off trail backpacking. They seal up better and hold the weight closer to your body to provide better balance. They can cost $150 to $500 for a good one, but are generally more comfortable to carry. External frame packs are less expensive: 80 to 150 dollars. They offer a simple design with easy access to your gear and fewer adjustments...and since the frame holds the pack away from your body, its cooler to carry on hot days. Put your sleeping bag on the bottom, mid-weight items in the middle, and the heaviest items as high up and as close to your body as possible. Make sure hard-edged items dont poke at your back and leave things you may need during the day handy, on top or in side pouches. Dont forget the essentials: map...compass... water...extra food and clothing...a fire starter... matches...an army knife...a flashlight...a first aid kit... sunscreen and sunglasses. Regardless of style, bigger is not better. Backpacks are designed to ride comfortably when full and a half-empty big pack wont ride as well as a full small pack. A good pack doesnt rub or hurt or drag...it feels as if youre wearing it, not carrying it.
