It can be done with the arms more Ralph Macchio-like. It's hard to jump exactly from leg to leg like Mr. Miyagi would've done, though. I need momentum to toss the hoop up off my foot (thus causing my base leg to stay planted longer than the Karate Kid's). Still, I wax on, I wax off. I try.
I keep hurting my foot, do you catch it on the leg or do you just have to toughen up?

I catch it on the arch of the foot. (That's the position where it's easiest to pop off and back to other foot or to hand.) Yes - it hurts. But like every hoop move, it hurts less the more you do it. I use 1/2" tubing, and I recently found it in 100, instead of 125. It would be even better if they had less tape on them!
