The next generation of gaming starts next year! Nintendo will be bringing out its successor tot he Wii, to be previewed at E3.

Nintendo of Japan posted a brief release today on the company's Japanese web site announcing the coming of their next console. The successor to the Wii will be launched in 2012. The release itself is exceptionally sparse on details, indicating only that the console will be shown off at E3 this year, in playable form.

Nintendo's not confirmed, hinted towards or provided fuel for any of the current Project Cafe rumors circulating. Instead, they've left interpretation and estimation wide open until their official announcement at this year's E3. Here's the bulk of the release: To whom it may concern: Re: Wii's successor system Nintendo Co., Ltd. has decided to launch in 2012 a system to succeed Wii, which the company has sold 86.01 million units on a consolidated shipment basis between its launch in 2006 and the end of March 2011. We will show a playable model of the new system and announce more specifications at the E3 Expo, which will be held June 7-9, 2011, in Los Angeles.

Nintendo announced the 3DS, after a storm of its own rumors, in a similar fashion last year. A press release reduced to a few paragraphs that painted a target date and revealed that the system would be shown at E3. As a writer, it's great knowing what type of show you'll be stepping up to cover as E3 approaches; otherwise? Pre-announcing consoles feels like a good way to suck a lot of wind out of a company's pre-show sails. The surprise of a new console at E3 is gone.

Instead, we'll be guessing at what, exactly, this new machine is capable of. If rumors are to be believed, it may be more powerful than consoles on the market today, or it may sport controllers with small screens on their faces.

Until E3, however, we're doing nothing but taking shots in the dark. Let's just hope it has good games at launch.

I always knew Nintendo for their cartoon like graphics and stuff. I don't think I want them to make the graphics like the other consoles. Imagine a Mario game thats got as good of graphics as PS3, what would that look like?

O.K without trying to ruffle any feathers and start unwanted or unneeded fights I am still baffled about what the wii 2 is???? from videos i've seen the wii u is an accessory to the wii due to come out in November (apparently) a new controller and the wii 2 is a totally new upgraded unit.... I shall keep digging until i find out more
