George Webb was the father of traditional jazz in the UK. His Dixielanders, formed in the 1940s paved the way for generations of musicians who followed.
This recording was made during George's appearance at the 2007 Louis Armstrong Celebration Jazz Festival at South Downs Holiday Village with a hand picked band of some of his friends. Featured musicians are: Chez Chesterman, cornet, Dave Bailey, clarinet, Mike Pointon, trombone, Keith Donald, bass & John Petters, drums.
George made his final recordings as a member of Humphrey Lyttelton's band in 1951. He didn't record again until 2004 with John Petters and his Hot Five - "An Evening with George Webb" Rose Records RRCD1031, available from www.traditional-jazz.com
George passed away on 10th March at the age of 92. As trumpeter, Ken Sims said, "George Webb was one of the nicest men in Jazz".
RIP George.

  • Thanks for the video. I have not seen George for many years but he played regularly at the Green Man Blackheath and the Mitre at Blackwall Tunnel. Unfortunately I have only just found out that he died. It is good to see him playing on this. Another loss with our Jazz past.

  • @namnig1 Yes the losses have been great this year, Nevil Skrimshire, Johnny Parker, Diz Disley and George/

  • Hey John,

While I've never heard of George Webb,he sounds to be a very fine player. It's been a while since we chatted. I've got some videos of my playing if you would like to see (unfortunately not on my Silver Ludwigs). Next step is gathering some musicians and I'm set to carry on the torch.

Keep swinging mate and don't ever stop.

    Michael

  • Nice one, John!!

May I add my tribute to one of the U.K.'s most influencial musicians in those grand old days.

    Clive.

  • John, Fantastic video. Thank you for sharing it and it is a wonderful dedication.

  • John,

Never met him but he seems to have been a real "5&9 plus" guy.

I was three when he put together his Dixielanders.

16 years later I joined my first band.

Regards...Howard Murray..Reeds with Martin Bennett's OLD GREEN RIVER jazz band.
