More than 900 families in Ecuador depend on crabbing in the mangroves of the Gulf of Guayaquil. These same mangroves mitigate global warming and contribute to global carbon sequestration efforts. The Gulf is one of six sites where the USAID Sustainable Forests and Coasts project is conserving biodiversity and protecting natural resources from depletion. In this case, the project works with the Ministry of the Environment and crabbing communities to protect the $60 million in crabbing related activities while preventing mangrove deforestation. See how over 60,000 hectares are being protected as well as how the project is helping communities receive a higher price for their crab meat sales.
