  • My Grandma was from Portugal. Born in 1881. Came to America on a "sailing ship around the Horn" when she was four years old. She used to talk about dancing something called: "Shama-Rita" I have no idea how it is spelled in Portuguese. :-) She was not allowed to go to school, so never learned to read or write. Her father sent her to work when she was 12 yrs. old!

  • Samba is another beautiful folk dance, but this one has origins in Angola, a country also invaded by the old Portuguese Empire. It comes from the word Semba and it was used first by African slaves settled in Brazil as a social manifestation against the humiliation and opression ruled by the Portuguese government.

  • The Portuguese invaded my country back in the 1800/1900s(i 4got my history) but this dance is nice ^.^
