What a breath of fresh air to meet a David Bowie-inspired band! RayGun gives us the lowdown on the Bowie-Jagger-Iggy sandwich, Napoleon as a MySpace friend, their favourite historical figures, and their coming album!

raygun

From RayGuns profile:

They love Andy Warhol, Darwin, Jimmy Page and Beethoven. Their MySpace friends include Phil Spector, Houdini and Napoleon. Their frontman loves shaking his hips on Steinway pianos. They love playing theremins, going crazy with synthesisers, turning their guitars up to 12 and singing exuberant songs about love, drugs, and girls. They are Raygun the brand new British band who want to bring excitement, Pop, and magic back to Rock and Roll.

More about their frontman? Hes called Ray Gun. Hes the man on lead vox and sonic experimentation. Blue-eyed, slinky-limbed and razor-cheekboned, he looks and sounds like the velvet-voiced, finger-waggling progeny of a promiscuous session between Jagger, Bowie and Iggy pop. Then theres The Adj, the bands scarf-swaddled, beard-sporting songwriter, on war guitar and audio discovery. Add Ben Lyonsmyth on bass (hip shaker and bottom end) and Sam Embery on drums (pace maker and heartbreaker). Together, they summon up the razzle of New Wave and the dazzle of the Scissor Sisters disco, the filthiness of INXS, as well as the rock nous of a band long ready to start a revolution.

1. Your profile goes on about David Bowie a lot. And it stated that its like the result of a promiscuous session between Jagger, Bowie, and Iggy Pop. So, whos on top?

(Combined laughter. Raygun slaps thigh).

Raygun (lead singer): I think probably Mick Jagger actually. Yeah. David Bowie would be in the middle, wouldnt he? (Laughs again).

The Adj: He would, yeah, somewhere, I think. I dont know though, I reckon Bowie would probably just get Jagger. I think youd think Jagger would win, but Bowie wins, actually. Surprising. But Iggy Pop would definitely win that one.

Raygun: There you go.

2. And how much are you like David Bowie?

Raygun: Oh well, I dont thinkIm not a David Bowie impersonator (laughs). I just really like David Bowie, were quite inspired by his music style from the 70s. But theyre just, you know, things that we can reference to. Relate our music to some sort of music that other people would know. Otherwise you have to sort of pigeonhole yourself in some category.

3. Which was your favourite decade hes reinvented his image so many times?

Raygun: Of David Bowie? I love the Bowie Berlin period actually, when he went to Berlin and he was making albums like Low.

4. The Thin White Duke?

Raygun: Yeah, yeah. Its very cool.

The Adj: I really like Lets Dance. That was probably my favourite album, I think. Which is not everyones choice, but its mine.

5. Whens your album coming out, and whats it going to be called?

Well, its just titled Raygun, keeping it really simple, so (laughs) yeah, people wont get confused by a long name.

(The band chimes in)

Raygun: Raygun 1.

The Adj: 10 songs, 10 we got 8 really fast sort of yknow, dancey party tunes, two slow ones, one ballad and one anthemic song. But yknow, we wanna see ten songs keep it short and interesting all the way, yknow.

6. Whats Treadmill Fail about? Its on your MySpace.

The Adj: Oh, that one. Yeah, thats just a bunch of people doing things just because they can. Cos the song is called Just Because isnt it. And of course just because you can doesnt mean you should. And so thats a whole bunch of clips that we put together.

7. Is Napoleon a good MySpace friend?

Raygun: Aha, Napoleon.

The Adj: The great MySpace friend. Uhm, he -hes not that active, actually. Ill tell you what when you got Napoleon in MySpace its a good thing because people see it. But as an actual MySpace friend, he rejects us all the time. He never returns my calls, or read my messages.
