The non-flying pilot watches the performance of the engines while the flying pilot keeps his head out of the cockpit for the takeoff roll. The NFP is telling the left seat that both engines are in good shape at 40% power, at which point the left seat applies takeoff power. The NFP then adjusts the throttles to match power output and calls out airspeed and when to rotate. This is a textbook departure.
