@EdBurminton You are misrepresenting my point. I am not arguing over musical taste. My problem with this performance is that Oldham is not playing the song with the intent of delivering *anything*. Well, one thing he was trying to deliver was himself, from having to play these songs over and over again. He did not intend to give his audience a good performance.

@koningrobot I just like this version better because he arpeggiated the accompaniment, which lacked dynamic in the original version. When I stumbled upon this version by accident, I had actually never heard the song before and barely knew who Will Oldham was. Naturally, I assumed this was how the song was meant to sound. I liked it. It reminded me of Neil Young. When I heard the album version, I was disappointed by the vocal melody, as well as the accompaniment. But, then again, I am a snob.

@koningrobot Yes, and I can see that that's a problem for you; when people are allowed to come in and say things that you disagree with.

@EdBurminton There's no passion here. It's unmistakable. Dylan and Waits and no doubt a slew of other otherwise decent artists do bland performances like this all the time. Will Oldham failed here, as he no doubt did on dozens of discarded studio takes. Good songs are hard to perform.
This is a big deal only because snobs come in and say that especially the failed versions are good.

@koningrobot Yeah, by all means... tell the artist how to play his own song, as well as what the intent was behind it. After all, you're the expert. All Will Oldham did was write it.

yes but i think they are saying that he is playing at rotate this in toronto.

I agree, this is the best performance of this song I've heard. It's not a song about depression that merits some sort of self-loathing performance. The song's about seeing a way beyond depression from the lowest vantage point. And Oldham was *feeling* it that day.
