This kind of tricks always involve the division rule that you cannot divide by zero. When you cross out (a-b) term, you are actually dividing both sides by (a-b). What is important is to be aware that "crossing the same terms from both sides" is not the mathematical operation, but just the short hand of diving the same term from the both sides. So, if you do math, then you won't get tricked by this, but if you "draw" lines and so on, then you get tricked.
you cant do that because once you divide an equation by both sides by an unknown of any kind you change the degree of the equation and thus you get 2=1
This is what made that submarine stop working. It divided by zero.

He divided by a-b, and using the first identity ( a=b ), he divided by zero, which is an undefined operation. Better luck next time Mr Hush!
