September 24, 2009 — Saudi Arabia has opened the King Abdullah University of Science and Technology (KAUST) near Jeddah, its first co-educational university where women can wear any kind of dress she likes. .
Authorities hope the mixed-gender centre will help modernise the kingdom's deeply conservative society.
The multi-billion-dollar university is being seen as an attempt by King Abdullah to "promote reforms" in the kingdom.
Women will also not be required to wear veils in the co-educational classes.
This is in contrast to the wider country where fanatic Wahhabism is practised and women are completely segregated.

I have never been forced by my father to wear hijab or cover my head..though he did emphasize on wearinf proper clothes that should not be revealing. Now I wanna wear Hijab,no one forced me ever, no one told me or the girls I knew to not educate ourselves or to not live our life ... Bt m glad m a muslm woman because m thankful that 90% of us are guarded tenderly by our parents,,we r not a willing toy for all men!!!

  • @M6A7Z8N9000kjshdfkhk --agreed! I only hope what she said at first was edited out; i wouldn't like to think she was telling downright LIES (she was a spokesperson for radio Jeddah!) How many people in the Kingdom have those extremist blinkered opinions? 5? 50? not many more (insha'allah!)

  • King Abdullah have a good friend that is Ameera Al-Taweel, she has a good relation with the king of her country, because she is from the royal family and because her ideas about women, Saudi Arabia have much to learn with Syria women, ancient christian syrian women had a large influence on the family as in mine by the father ancestry.

  • COOL! am thinking of studying here after my undergraduate studies :) shouldn't be a problem since the president of the university is a singaporean too! ^^
