Old Mill High School Steel Drum Band performs Lynyrd Skynyrd's Free Bird!

After hearing multiple requests for "Free Bird" at many of the band's concerts and appearances, Mike Miller, the band director decided to heed the call.

Mike Miller transcribed Free Bird for steel drums.

Student Daniel Austin transcribed and performed the Free Bird "piano solo".

Students Jason Barteck and Anne Thompson transcribed the Free Bird "guitar solo".

This recording was made May 13, 2008 at the Old Mill Spring Concert in Millersville, Maryland.

Expect to see more steel drum videos from this and other concerts!

Old Mill Steel Drum alumni tenorpan07 (http://youtube.com/user/tenorpan07 ) posted another recording of this Free Bird performance.

  • so is ur son like the main part

  • Not quite - there's a bunch of good musicians in the band. Mr. Miller is great for drawing out the talent. Dan (on triple cello) loves the pans. He graduated in 2008 and he's getting a band together at UMBC.

  • @nunujack007 The triple-pan solo and the lead solo (guitar solo) were all by rote. Basically everything after it switches to fast was rote.

  • This is AWESOME ! ! ! I'm sending it to my son-in-law, who LOVES this song. I think this is the best rendition I've ever heard....inclUding Lynard Skynard! The point where it "get's down" is well worth the wait...AND YOUR SON IS GREAT~* Thanks a lot, this brightened my day:)
