Transport fire stalls eastbound traffic on Hwy 8 [Kitchener, ON, CA]

KITCHENER — Eastbound traffic is still backed up on Highway 8 because a tractor trailer caught fire early this morning.

Until eastbound lanes at the King Street East exit are reopened later today, traffic is being diverted at the Fairway Road exit.

OPP say the truck driver hit the right side of a retaining wall on Highway 8 around 6 a.m. after swerving to avoid wildlife on the road.

The truck began leaking diesel fuel, which ignited the trailers load of compressed cardboard. The tractor of the truck was heavily damaged but the driver was able to get out without any injuries.

The cardboard inside the trailer had to be unloaded so firefighters could extinguish the blaze. Sand was used to clean up the fuel.

The Ministry of Transportation was called in to the scene.

Westbound traffic was also delayed as motorists slowed to look at the accident.

Police say charges are pending against the 58-year-old Waterloo driver.

The priority was getting them out of the trailer. It's easier to deal with multiple smaller fires, than one massive, out of control fire in a trailer!
