The work is an audio-visual, interactive installation that is part of the Embrace! show at the Denver Art Museum.

I am one of the members of a collaborative team led by Timothy Weaver that includes Josh Fishburn, Brigid McAuliffe, and Nick Myers.

The show officially opened on November 14th, 2009 and our work is installed in the FuseBox Gallery on the 4th floor.

The interactive installation, in fitting with the theme of the Embrace! exhibition, creates an interactive audio-visual "data painting", using visualizations and sonifications of solar wind, terrestrial climate, and biological data as it explores the ecological memory of the specific location of the Hamilton building.

Over the course of the past 6 months I created sound design compositions using the Solar Wind Harp, a software instrument I designed. The software allows real-time performance of soundscapes as it translates solar wind data from the NASA ACE satellite. These compositions are one component of a complex "data-ecosystem" that is always in flux, creating unique experiences with each visit to the space.

It is an honor to be a part of such a great show and to be in the company of so many amazing artists.

The exhibition runs through April 4th, 2010.

  • I am really confused, what is going on exactly?

  • It is an AV installation at the Denver Art Museum. The video does not do it justice, sorry. As one enters the room, one or more people are tracked through the space, and that motion is mapped to the movement of the video on the large wall. The audio is derived from solar wind data, terrestrial wind data, and genomic data from extinct species that once lived in the area. These elements are combined in real-time to create a unique mix for each visitor. I hope that helps. It's best to visit show.

  • funny... so you work at SparkFun? nice... i buy stuff there a lot. different components written in different things. original blob detection/motion tracking was done in Processing, but then moved over to Max, as the museum prefered that. the solar wind harp software is all in Max. I use Arduino for some of my other stuff too. What kinda stuff do you build?

  • @sparkfun woops, forgot I was on my work's youtube account.

  • @davidfodel that helps, I'll check it out some time soon. What was the software written in?
