I open my eyes and look up at the tent walls and its glowing orange hue. It's early morning and my tent is pitched along Evolution Lake in the high sierras. My blood quickens as I feel the excitement of another day of exploration, to simply see what is beyond the next bend of this magical trail. Life has not been disrupted by the routine of the working man, each day is a joy , people I pass have a glow, I am living in the wilderness, it feels right and I would not rather be doing anything else in the world. Soon later I sling the pack around my shoulder and continue Southbound on the JMT. It's day 12 on the trail as I begin to pass the high alpine lakes, two of them named after the daughters of John Muir. I then feel connected to him in a way, he saw these meadows, valleys, mountains, just as I see and experience them today and surly felt the similar emotions. Maybe it's the day after day of summer sunshine , or the glow of the milky way strewn across the night sky, or wildflower meadows lining the trail, or the uncountable amount of majestic peaks and high mountain passes this is the crème de la crème of the whole PCT. Wilderness walkers of the world, this trail is the pilgrimage each must hike, follow in the steps of John Muir and spend a summer sauntering through "The Range of Light."

  • thanks! I used a canon S2IS, which worked well and the newer models are jammed with even more features. One little piece of advice would be dont miss half dome especially if you have never done it.

  • Thanks for the amazing post! you got an amazing woman to go on the adventure with you. I'm looking to do JMT this summer and am getting super stoked. If you had any advice for a first timer what would it be? and what camera were you using

  • Well done! Nice mix of vidoe and stills, BW, color, etc. Makes me wish I was packing up for a trip.

  • I didnt see much snow. When did you start?

  • Great pics and video! Funny I came across this due to a typo (surly instead of surely)!

Takes me back to some backpacking adventures I had in the Sierras when I was a teenager - not often a boy from Missouri gets to experience vistas such as those shown here.

I have this trek on my bucket list now!

  • Thanks for sharing! Looked Great!!
