It's actually not too old (2006). The creator wanted it to resemble classic games from the NES era, which is a pretty awesome goal to have :P

Indie just means "independent", as in made by a single person instead of a studio or group.

And nah - I'm definitely not some hardcore gamer - I just love sidescrollers.
