A short clip of audio from a very late run back home to Durango in November of 2008. The train is running back empty with only a few crew and off duty employees on board, and the night has given way to some dramatic lightning and hail while the engine stops for water at Needleton, Colorado. The brakeman heads back up the track to protect the rear of the train, though no trains will be coming for months, as this is the last train out of Silverton for the winter. This whistle calls the brakeman in from the storm, back to the train so we can head home and drop the fire.. leaving this part of the mountains alone, cold, and quiet for the winter.

  • if there is no trains, then why send a brakeman out to protect the train?
