This is in the National train museum in Green Bay, Wisconsin, only a slide show, but maybe in the future i'll go back and take video! Taken with a Sony CyberShot S30 camera.

History of the UP 4017 Big Boy:

UP 4017 was built in Schenectady, New York during 1941. During its 20 year career with the Union Pacific it ran more than 1 million miles.

The Union Pacific Railroad donated 4017 to the National Railroad Museum in July, 1961.

From 1961 until 2001 the 4017 sat outside, exposed to the harsh Wisconsin winters. As luck would have it, the Union Pacific took great steps to preserve the locomotive. They put a protective layer of a foam-like material in the firebox and in the smokebox to reduce the likelihood of rusting. They also applied two large covers over the massive smoke stacks. These efforts kept the inside components well preserved, but the boiler jacket was not removed. Eventually the Museum had the boiler jacket removed. This decision protected the exterior of the boiler from severe rusting from constant water contact.

In 2000 the 4017 moved for the last time. 4017 is now placed indoors the Lenfesty Center at the National Railroad Museum.

  • Awesome vid! I'm looking forward to seeing X4017 in the summer when we go up to Green Bay.

  • @straswa you'll have to take some video of it and post it to this one to share!

  • i never really seen a big boy in person but i have seen the Allegheny 2-6-6-6 #1601 in person. I would say that both of them might be about the same size almost. I know The big boy is longer but maybe not higher. It stil is one of my top 5 Steamers.

  • @SuperBigboy4884 at the beginning of the photo show you'll see a person standing with a green shirt he is about 5'8" tall so that should give you a idea the height.

  • Are you a loud to pull the whistle Rope and bell rope

  • @1BoyAwesome not sure if they had those still attached, been over 3 years ago, but if they did it wouldn't of worked anyways i am sure.

  • @MrM4ttyf There's a slight problem to that. The building that the A4 is in, was built around the train along with the #4017 ans the GG1. The only way to get them out would be to dismantle the building. Also the A4 is one of the crown jewels of the museum's collection and I don't see them having any intention on moving it.

  • This is a beautiful piece of American capability.

  • I read somewhere that this museum once had plans to remove this engine and restore it to operating condition for a movie, but changed plans when the the movie script was scrapped. Even if they did manage to restore this engine, there is very little track left in this country that this engine can run on due to its enormous weight.

Still a nice piece of history

  • I'm 12 and what is this

  • @34105swanage i agree that a4 belongs back in england can we have it back please

  • @34105swanage So tell us..Just WHO are you "firing" for ??...Because, I WILL come and watch you !! A 4-4-4-4

    ??!!?

  • @34105swanage So your saying that a 'Big Boy' should be a 4-4-4-4, for a person or whatever you are who claims to be a 'fireman' to say that this Big Boy should have being built as a 4-4-4-4 shows me that not all your marbles are their.
