@commiepower1 Democracy isnt "imposed" in africa the people usually demand it but it is surpressed. the population are starving mostly because of corrupt regimes and dictators. i'd say most africans want democracy but its not like they'd exactly get to vote for it, that's why the revolutions have happened in tunisia, egypt, and possibly now libya, although it's dictator is doing terrible things to stay in power.
what IS universal suffrage anyways?? One man one vote means universal suffrage??? SCMP's been something to HK, and still is, you ever read their classified??? iluvuuknowwho...
1 - Democracy in Africa are in many cases imposed by foreign power in exchange of foreign aid (IMF SAP) - whereas the issue of democracy is in reality not priority for its population starving of food.Democratic demands in HK are grassroots, and not imposed by the UK. On top of this,HK people are educated and wealthy.
2 - There was little incentive for democratic change UNTIL the 89 event, which transformed HK's role for democratic change in HK due to their mistrust of Chinese political leaders.
It is impossible to put Hong Kong to compare with Africa and Middle East countries. Generally, their citizens are not well educated, plus their voting process might not be well organised, also there might involve corruption and cronyism. Therefore, their polls was going to be messy. But not because they have universal suffrage then they are in a mess. Many HK ppl believe and are confident that we can vote our most appropriate leader.
Anson Chan is just a phoney. She never cares for democracy & never cares for HK people. My question to all you "peanut brains" out there that if she is claiming to be what she is today. Why didn't she stood up to the British & be the democray voice for the HK people at the time of HK under the British governing. Chan, even after HK returned to China, continue serving her two real masters -British & American. She is just a puppet & she is willing to be used as a mouthpiece by the West.
I'm not from HK though but Anson Chan gives me an impression before the handover that she is no pushover of the Chinese authorities, while Regina Ip still bears the after taste of "Article 23" issue ? So, Anson Chan will challenge Donald Tsang next ?

Chan is great! She knows when she should act for democracy such as Tsang knows how to overthrow Tung.
