Guns are inanimate objects which, like most things, can be used for evil, but it depends on who is using them. Gun violence has to do with criminals primarily who do NOT get their guns legally (anyone who says they do is an absolute moron), and those who did obtain them legally and misuse them are irresponsible gun owners. That is the issue. Not the guns themselves. No, we are not paranoid, but there are many threats which exist, contrary to what you may think and having protection is necessary.
