Explains how to print a self-test page on the HP Photosmart C4200, C4300, C4400, and C4500 printers.

A self-test page can help identify the source of a printing problem. If you can print a self-test page and the self-test page looks 'normal', then you know the source of the printing problem is somewhere else.

The printer shown in this video is an HP Photosmart C4280, but the steps are the same if your printer is an HP Photosmart C4200, C4300, C4400, or C4500.

I am an HP employee but I do not represent HP on this site.

  • Sounds like you're not seeing any black ink on the test page? That would indicate that your black cartridge is not printing. Most likely it's out of ink.

  • Exceedingly educative thank you, I presume your current audience would definitely want a good deal more writing like this carry on the excellent hard work.

  • What if I have black ink, and my printer will still not print out the black ink?

  • So that is why i cant print any thing in black thanks for our help!

  • The first step you would want to take is to run the Clean Printhead option from the printer utility. To access the utility, open Solution Center, click on settings, click on printer toolbox and then choose the 'Clean the printheads' option. It will print out a test page at the end of the clean, if the printout looks good, you are done cleaning. Try all of the levels as necessary. If you are still running into problems, you may need to replace your cartridges.

  • so it's printed with ,kinda...faded, misaligned bits, but what to do? It keeps missing lines in text documents and going grey unexpectedly :(

  • ive done the test but it does not tell me the serial number and the other text it only shows the color test blocks the printer is the C4580
