Video number 2 of the 2009-2010 series. This one features a very fun jazz track. I'm not a jazz drummer nor claiming to be one. I like jazz, but haven't been playing it long. A Dave Weckl or Steve Gadd type drummer would completely smoke this track. Now, having set the bar to the appropriate level, ENJOY!

The drumkit is my prized Mapex Saturn Special Edition Birch & Walnut in Supernova Red. This kit is the Five Star Drum Shops Edition. I bought this kit from West Coast Drums in Orange County about a year before they closed their doors. I kept the tuning the same as for other music I play. I didn't tune them specially for jazz. It has Remo Emperor batter heads and Ambassador resonant heads. Given the kits super thin shells, the sounds is very boomy and resonant, even when playing with bundle sticks. The sticks are Vic Firth Steve Smith signature Tala Wand with a foam core. The choice of snare is likely not the best for jazz. It's a DW Collector's Edition Copper 4 x 14".

My choice of cymbals is great for jazz, although I use them for rock all the time. I have a collection of Zildjian K Custom Dark cymbals. The hi-hat is a K Custom Hybrid 13 1/4" and the splash is a regular K.

This track comes to you courtesy of one of the best drum magazines, Rhythm. I take no credit for the music and arrangements. I just came up with those drum parts.

The 3 awesome angles were achieved using Go Pro HD Hero cameras. -Danny

  • @jts024 Tried. Too old for that. :)

  • First up I am going to tell you just to hear me out and read the whole comment first. When you crashing the cymbals try hit them in a way that you get a nice short accent instead of a full sustained crash that will help with the feel. Also you swing is just a little straight. The more jazz you play and listen to the better this will get. Also have look at jazz jazz permutations and play them on the snare and bass with the ride pattern and hi hat on top. Hope this was at least mildly encouraging

  • @Crusada54 Thanks! Good insight!

  • dude nice playing very tasteful.. one question. what is that wooden thing on the side of your snare drum? i think i may want one.

  • @Soundman37 Thanks! Google: Yamaha Groove Wedge - Makes cross-stick patterns very warm and nice.

  • @kiethsurf1 Then go laugh. If you were as mature musically as you claim, you would keep your nasty comments to yourself. There are plenty of bad videos on YouTube. I'm entitled to my own. I enjoyed doing this video, so screw you.

  • blegh. This might be the least swinging drummer I ever saw.

  • Nice I like the use of the GoPro

  • @lompeboertje Mate, he just said he isn't a jazz drummer. He just ENJOYS playing it. That's what music is about enjoyment. You're all forgetting that none of you play like Gadd, Chambers, or Collaiuta so why don't you back that fuck up and show some respect to your fellow drummers.
