Further info on how this speech came to be. The reception of the crowd was such that JFK, having by then seen the wall and sensing the mood of the people, felt that the speech that had been prepared was not adequate for the situation. Therefore, he chose to disregard that speech and wrote this one (that we all know and love) while on route to the event. I think there is only one paragraph in it that was from the original text.

The jelly doughnut joke is an urban myth. Berliner only means jelly doughnut in some parts of Germany. In a recent book about JFK and Berlin, it was revealed that Kennedy through his interpreter knew that was the meaning of the word in some parts of Germany. But it was decided that the Berliners would not interpret it that way and that was the best way for him to say what he meant, which was: I am one with the people of Berlin.
