I'm nervous about the landing, especially this one, but when you think about it, we've accomplished most of the landing sequence in past missions. The approach, check. The heat shield, check. The chute, check. Ejecting the cover, check. Rocket propulsion landing, check (Phoenix). The only question is the crane. Personally I think we should send out multiple MER-like rovers with different tools to explore the planet. $2 billion could get you four rovers in four locations.

Just amazing.. these guys are lucky to be part of this history making event.

I remember watching this live on NASA TV. It made me late for work! I couldn't turn away, it was so exciting.

BACK IN THE DAY OF THE EARLY SPACE PROGRAM, EVERYONE WOULD BE WEARING THEIR OWN CLOTHES, SWEATING THEIR OWN SWEAT, HAVING THEIR OWN COFFEE CUPS AND SMOKING LIKE FIENDS. WHAT'S THE DEAL WITH THE UNIVERSAL ATTIRE? AND THE WALMART CHEERING? OH, THAT'S RIGHT. THIS IS A RE-ENACTMENT... NEVERMIND

Dear Bitarten:
Phoenix Project Manager, Barry Goldstein says:
'The reason it took two hours was we had to wait for the Odyssey Spacecraft to return to the Phoenix landing site. Odysseys orbit is about 2 hours, and there were overhead for our landing, and once they returned on the next pass we were able to download the pictures.
We actually do have pictures of the Phoenix spacecraft on the surface of Mars, taken by the MRO spacecraft the day after we landed.'

From Rob Manning, Mars Science Laboratory Chief Engineer:
If you have not already started, take algebra I & II, pre-calculus, physics and even an AP math class if you can. Please remember that the stuff that you learn in high school at first may seem boring, but dont let that stop you. The further you go, the more fun it gets.
