The 80's seems to have been the best time for fast food commercials. Everyone (especially Wendy's) loved to beat up on McDonald's any way they could. First it was the "Where's the Beef?" commercials.
Up until the late 90's, McDonald's did make sandwiches en mass, and then they sat in a huge "bin"-- a warming area-- until they either sold or got tossed. Sometimes, though, the employees didn't toss them, so customers would get old sandwiches, and is the basis for this commercial.
Nowadays, most places make up the sandwiches per order.

This guy has got the best advertising voice of all time! I can't think of old commercials without hearing him in the Wendy's ads. Classic.
