There are new laws coming into force which require formal training in order to use blue lights/sirens and exemptions - aroung 20 of the Wasdale team members have signed up for the training which includes two full evening theory sessions follwed by a 45 minute written exam with a minimum 70% pass mark. In addition there is a full days practical driver training which covers roadcraft plus driving through built up and rural area on blue lights - the video and stills were taken 17 January 2009. training was delivered by a certified police driving instructor

  • As a police response driver - a day's course to be response driving seems dangerously inadequate. The sort of driving techniques being used in this video would have you thrown off a police driving course. No push-pull steering, taking hands off the wheel, letting the steering wheel run through your hands, driving with one hand on the gearstick, crossing arms, coming into hazards too fast....not very impressive! Hope a more comprehensive course is now followed - this video worries me!

Thank you for your feedback - points well made. This is the only footage we have of the training sessions and perhaps it would have been good to have had a shot of less one handed and more push and pull etc. The points you have raised will have been brought to the attention of the driver under instruction following his session at that time - the instructor on that day (and indeed throughout the training is a Police Driving Instructor)

  • Cant help but echo what has already been said...

2:06 proves unequivocally the lack of training as the driver panics to both manage the gear, steer appropriately/ maintain vehicle positioning, and thank other road users.

This honestly looks like youve taken any standard driver and put them in control of a vehicle on red. I can only hope there was a lot more training involved after this.

Granted this kind of criticism comes thick and fast on youtube but what i've seen is enough to comment
