When I start my 1995 SAAB 900 up cold there is this rattle. Eventually it subsides when engine gets warm but does not go away completely. Had issue maybe 4 weeks and seems to be getting worse.
Add: eventually got so bad I bought new car. Chain never broke even though noise was quite bad.

  • sounds like a piece of shit hah

  • 100% idler pulley, I had the same problem.

  • its the chain guides

  • why didnt yu just replace the chain instead of buying a new car?

  • It could be a hydraulic lifter. They rattle more when cold and then the rattle goes, but if you have a blocked passage to the lifter in question, then the rattle will still be evident.

  • When this happens you need to fill your motor oil, if that doesnt work then you will need to replace the parts because the damage has been done to them.

  • It sounds like they put the engine in backwards. Intermittent sound, turn on the AC to see if compressor clutch is scraping first. Then remove drive belt and go from there.

  • yup, sounds like an idler pulley

  • I think it was probably the idler pulley... mine sounded very similar before I had it replaced.

  • ooo that sound coming from a broken enjin mounting, need a new set of engine mounting
