When I start my 1995 SAAB 900 up cold there is this rattle. Eventually it subsides when engine gets warm but does not go away completely. Had issue maybe 4 weeks and seems to be getting worse.
Add: eventually got so bad I bought new car. Chain never broke even though noise was quite bad.
sounds like a piece of shit hah

why didnt yu just replace the chain instead of buying a new car?

It could be a hydraulic lifter. They rattle more when cold and then the rattle goes, but if you have a blocked passage to the lifter in question, then the rattle will still be evident.

When this happens you need to fill your motor oil, if that doesnt work then you will need to replace the parts because the damage has been done to them.

It sounds like they put the engine in backwards. Intermittent sound, turn on the AC to see if compressor clutch is scraping first. Then remove drive belt and go from there.

yup, sounds like an idler pulley

I think it was probably the idler pulley... mine sounded very similar before I had it replaced.
