instead of using 4 D batteries could i use a 9.6v RC battery?

Yes, 9.6 would run it a little faster. I would actually like to convert to those when I find a good price. Every year this project gets better because I find better ways to do things.

I get most of my electrical components from kelvin.com. There are lots of other places if you want to look.
