https://www.facebook.com/TheRPGFanatic This interview was taken at the Game Developers Conference (GDC Online) in Austin, Texas 2010. It was meant to be part of a documentary on the MMORPG industry but that project is currently on hold while I focus on other projects.

Dr. Richard Bartle is the author of the book, Designing Virtual Worlds. He is the co-creator of MUD1, the first Multi-User Dungeon. He has been heavily involved in the MMORPG industry and written a variety of essays on MMORPG / virtual world design. He holds a Ph.D. in Artificial Intelligence. The 'Bartle Test' (which categorizes gamer personality and playstyles) is named after him and based upon his work.

I've decided to release the interview in a mostly unedited format because I believe the information he conveys is very useful to game design students. This is the first part of the video.
