It takes place about the same time as HL2. You are at an aperature Science Laboratory, obviously over run by a robotic experiment gone incredibly wrong. And Aperature deals with time space devices and more questionably moral applications. Aperature has several other installments, the games never say anything about where its from or who ran the company.

actully the reasons Portal came to be I believe... now this is my opionin but in HL2 Ep2 you can see freight container with the same company as in portal. so in the end i think the portal gun will be in ep3 and they had so much fun with the gun they made a little game of itself(its a VERY short game)
