  • @ronin752 Marriage is neither necessary to create children or to raise them or to form families. A marriage commitment is not necessary to outline these obligations. So, the logic isn't actually sound.

    That argument is internally consistent, philosophically speaking, but in the United States the only relevant issue is whether or not the right of gay people to marry is CONSTITUTIONALLY protected.

I think the most reasonable way to attack this argument is to state that in a world where the birth rate exceeds the death rate, there needs to be methods of making sure that all children are cared for.     Marriage, in the context of the United States, is a legal contract. However, first and foremost, marriage has cross-culturally been understood as a social contract that acknowledges the commitment between men and women. These commitments, whether monogamous or polygamous, are necessary because men and women form families, which are the basis for nations. Marriage outlines a man and woman's obligations to each other and offspring. So the logic is sound.

    between man and woman (whether it is artificial insemenation or sexual intercourse. So his argument is valid. This is why Obama countered the argument by stating that the argument is wrong. Logic is a tool to arrive at truth, and not truth itself. You can have a perfectly logical argument that is not true. Truth and validity are not the same thing.
